Legal basics about health insurance for students in Canada

Canadas statutory health care system consists of 13 provincial and territorial health care insurance plans. Although there is no national health care plan, the provinces and territories provide almost the same benefits. The statutory health insurance in general is only available for Canadian citizens and foreigners with permanent resident status.

As a foreign student in Canada you have to take out a health insurance on your own. You can contact the univeristy you are applying to in order to get more information about the health insurance solutions available in the paricular province. Please note, that if you travel from one province or territory to another you might need an extra travel insurance.
